Summer is here! Hotter temperatures and sun exposure can zap your skin of its glow if you’re not careful. Whether you are hitting the beach, pool, lake or just on the go all day long, here’s what you can do to protect your skin and keep it glowing all summer long!
Eating your way to healthy skin is super easy during summer. Fill your plate antioxidant rich foods like berries, melon and veggies that are in season. Full of vitamins C and E, these healthy snacks help fight wrinkles, free radical damage and potentially help skin fend off sunburn. Of course, food can’t replace SPF, so don’t forget to use sunblock! Our favorite on the go snack for summer is cut up cantaloupe and watermelon. Both are packed with antioxidants and water, so they hydrate skin and keep you looking radiant! You can find a lot of healthy recipes at ALOHA with these types of antioxidants and other superfoods.
Staying hydrated on the go is critical to keeping skin looking healthy during summer. Bring a water bottle wherever you go and sip throughout the day. Bored of plain water? One of our favorite ways to stay hydrated at a summer party is to serve agua frescas. Agua frescas are made by combining fresh fruits with water. If you make them yourself, you can limit the amount of sugar to ensure you are drinking the healthiest possible beverage for your skin. Check out our Pinterest board for some of our favorite recipes!
Most people love to tan their skin because of the “healthy glow” it gives them. The reality is too much sun exposure can leave skin looking depleted, dull and damaged. To prevent skin damage and keep skin glowing, you MUST wear SPF. SPF in make-up and moisturizers is great for days when you will not be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time (ie. if you work in an office). However, if you will be outside for a long period of time, use a broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. We recommend waterproof if you will be active or in the water. Apply 30 min before going outside and apply every 2 hours. Wear a wide brimmed hat to further protect face, scalp and ears.

If unprotected, sun can damage your lips, leaving them dry and cracked. Use a lip balm with SPF 15 or higher, and reapply every 2 hours or so. If you are drinking or eating, apply more often since you may be licking the balm off of your lips. While in the sun, stay away from petroleum jelly or high-shine lip gloss. They do not provide SPF protection and may even amplify the rays of the sun. If you opt for a lipstick, choose one with SPF, or apply a lip balm with SPF and antioxidants under lipstick for extra moisture and protection.
Take a break after a long day of running around to treat yourself to a simple cucumber mask that will cool, soothe and hydrate the skin. Wash and slice a chilled cucumber into thin circles, then apply to the entire surface area of your face, even on top of your closed eyes. Relax and let the coolness soak into your skin.
