When it comes to skin health, a happy gut is essential. You can slather on designer creams until you’re blue in the face, but if your digestive system is not functioning properly, your skin will show it.
What’s the connection? In a nutshell: your gut needs ‘good’ bacteria to process and digest the nutrients (and waste) from the foods you eat. Food that slows down digestion (refined carbs, sugar, processed foods) can create a shift in the molecules inside the gut, increasing the ‘bad’ bacteria and decreasing the ‘good’ bacteria. This ‘bad’ bacteria can then leak out into the bloodstream and cause inflammation throughout the body that will manifest in a variety of skin problems including acne, rosacea and/or chronic dryness.
How Probiotics Can Help:
To restore a healthy balance in your gut and get that digestive fire burning brightly again, try adding probiotics or ‘good’ bacteria. There are many delicious foods and beverages that contain probiotics. Gulp down a kombucha every morning, or add kimchi or sauerkraut to any (every?) meal. And then, of course, there are yogurt and kefir, both teaming with probiotics.
* Note: not all yogurts are created equal! The pasteurization process for store-bought yogurt can sometimes strip the most beneficial probiotics, like acidophilus. Make sure the label says ‘live, active cultures’ to ensure you’re getting the maximum probiotic benefits.
Or, you can simply add a daily probiotic supplement to your routine. Your local health food store probably carries a variety – look for one that can deliver 20 to 50 billion live organisms per dose and has a combination of different strains of probiotics.
It’s also a good idea (read: essential) to clean up your diet – all the kombuchas in the world can’t undo a breakfast of cupcakes and leftover pizza. If you’re looking to see a real shift in your skin, best to avoid refined sugar, gluten and processed foods for a while (read: forever).
A clean, happy gut will reward you with radiant, glowing skin. Then, the products you use have a chance of making a real difference, improving an already good situation. Like icing on the cake you’re not eating.
