New Year, New Skin!

Making your New Year’s resolutions?   As you are making positive changes for a healthier body and mind, don’t forget the New Year is the perfect time to give your skin a fresh start. Making small changes in your diet and sleep, can improve your skin health by protecting your skin from loss of collagen.

Collagen is the protein our bodies produce naturally that keeps skin smooth and elastic. If you are not getting enough sleep or eating the right diet, you could be contributing to unnecessary collagen loss, which can lead to your skin appearing less youthful.

Here are 2 changes you can make today to help limit the loss of collagen and keep skin healthy and glowing:

Cut back on sugar

We love a sweet treat as much as the next person, but the effect it can have on your skin health isn’t so sweet. The breakdown of sugars in the body, a process called glycation, damages the collagen in skin. Simple carbohydrates, like sugar, candy, packaged snacks and soda break down more rapidly which speeds up the breakdown of collagen and elastin. Longer term, this could result in sagging skin and wrinkles. Cut back the “bad” sugars and stick with low-glycemic carbs like whole grains, which are naturally low in sugar. The body processes them more slowly which limits the loss of collagen.

Get 7-9 hours of sleep

Allowing your body to recoup from your day is important to overall health. The same is true for your skin which goes into repair mode at night. A good night sleep is crucial for the repair process to function. Your friends and colleagues might not see a difference after one night of poor sleep, but the effects are cumulative. After a few nights you will begin to see sallow skin and puffy eyes. Chronic sleep loss can lead to lackluster skin, fine lines, and dark circles under the eyes. When your body is sleep-deprived, it releases more of the stress hormone cortisol.  In excess amounts, cortisol leads to stress and inflammation of the cells, which leads to the breakdown of skin collagen. The good news is the effect of a full nights sleep will be seen almost immediately with the return of a healthy glow to your skin.
